Komen for the Cure at 25
Nancy Brinker remembers when her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977. Susie was only 33. In those days, diagnosis meant misinformation and limited options. Before Susie died, she asked her sister Nancy to help find a cure. Ms. Brinker rallied friends and formed a nonprofit foundation in 1982. She started with $200, a typewriter, and a list of names. A year later, she organized the first Race for the Cure which attracted 800 runners to the Galleria in Dallas.
Today, 25 years later, Komen for the Cure has raised nearly $1 billion for Breast Cancer research. There are now 122 national and 3 international Komen affiliates run by more than 100,000 volunteers. Each affiliate hosts a local Race for the Cure. In 2006 there were 120 Race for the Cure events with more than 1.5 million participants. Funds raised support numerous breast cancer research and patient support programs. Additionally, Komen has become the primary beneficiary of the 3-Day Walk.
ViaViente is a Race for the Cure sponsor in Dallas and Plano. Craig Keeland says, “ViaViente is committed to helping Komen in the Journey for the Cure!” Â
