Craig’s Message – Invest In Your Relationships
Accelerate Your Relationships in ‘08 If you want your relationships to thrive, invest in them by being a giver rather than a taker. I call this Making Relational Deposits in people’s lives.
Take the time to encourage others and build them up. Help them feel better about themselves. This is not always easy because some people are hard to be around. They always have problems and drain your energy. They are not bad people. They just seem to always have some major crisis happening and seem to need your help to solve every crisis.
Everybody gets down now and then. That’s just being human. What I’m talking about is the person who is down ALL of the time and drains the emotional reserves of everyone around them.
I like to think of my relationships as Emotional Bank Accounts. I have an account with every person I have a relationship with. Every time I interact with someone, I am either making a deposit or making a withdrawal from that Emotional Bank Account.
You make a deposit with every positive thing you do in regard to another person. Whether it’s at the grocery store, school, or office, get into the habit of spreading good things into other people’s lives. If you’re always negative and talking about what’s wrong in your life, you are making what I call Relational Withdrawals. Practice turning your thinking around. Instead of asking, “What can you do for ME?” ask, “What can I do to help someone else and make their life better?”
Be interested in people. Take the time to let someone know you care or know that he or she is special. Not only will you enrich your Emotional Bank Accounts with other people, they will gravitate to your positive energy.
A simple compliment can dramatically alter someone’s day. Telling someone, “You look great today” or “I appreciate you being my friend” can have a huge impact on them. It only takes a few extra seconds to say something positive to someone, but the outcome of that positive interaction can be gigantic.
People will want to talk to you. You’ll increase your circle of friends and have more people to share Vía with. I am constantly amazed how people turn up their positive energy when I’ve said something complimentary to them or even just said, “Hello.” People want to be good to you when you bring good into their lives.
This week, take the time to make Relational Deposits with people wherever you are. You’ll see your relationships improve and your circle of friends expand.
