Sweedish Study Confirms the Power of Antioxidants from Food
According to a new study from Sweden, eating a whole food diet rich in antioxidants with lots of fruits and vegetables is linked to reducing the risk of stroke in women.
Regardless of a woman’s heart disease history, consuming antioxidants helps reduce her stroke risk. Researchers believe that the protection comes from the antioxidants’ ability to stop inflammation and oxidative stress by neutralizing harmful free radicals.
In addition, the American Heart Association states that antioxidants can also help to reduce blood clots and lower blood pressure. Researcher Susanne Rautiainen reports, “This means people should eat more foods such as fruits and vegetables that contribute to total antioxidant capacity.”
The study looked at the health of more than 35,000 women – some with heart disease and some without. Researchers found that women with a heart disease history who consumed the most antioxidants from food had a 57% DECREASED risk of stroke.
The most compelling part of this research is that antioxidants can in fact help stop disease – but those antioxidants must come from whole food to have an impact on health.
